I use this rod to cast 8-12 oz spider weights and bait for sharks and has landed 4 this month around the 100-200 pound range
Rod broke whole fighting a bass in the surf. The fall run on long island NY is hot. The bass were up to the mid 30 pound range. While in battle the upper piece explodes. The fish gets free and im left on the beach staring at a broken fishing pole . Not to mention the dozen or so anglers looking at me . I contact st croix because i am under warranty and for a price they send a new top piece . But it only slides on to the base one inch! I call st croix and talk to Andy. Andy by his word assures me the fit is correct. So, on my 3rd cast with my new top piece snug down all of the one inch and using a mag darter that weighs about an ounce the pole explodes again exactly at the junction where the two pieces join. Total failure from Andy and st croix. Now i have to go through the whole process over but refuse to pay another dime and will request brand new Seage; probably costing me the rest of the fall run. Thanks...
I purchased this to replace my Mono Surf rod (similar specs), which I had owned for 14 years. In my first outing, while jigging a fast moving outflow current (from shore), I hooked into a fish and the rod tip and proximal frenule snapped. Other fishermen near me also heard the break and couldn’t believe it. I have been fishing this spot for years and have never experienced this kind of break.. Not the same quality as the previous (now discontinued) Mojo Surf, but hoping this was just a lemon. Will consider an upgrade, though bummed it will cost more.
Owning both the 9 ft ML and 10.6 ft M I can say of all the rods I have used these have the best feel and sensitivity. caught larger reds, pompano and whiting on the 9 ft and was not worried about rod breakage. the 10.6 has enough sensitivity to feel the smaller fish as well as the backbone to bring in the big ones. I don't buy surf rods from anywhere else now
The very best rods I’ve ever used for plugging away for stripers and blues all day and all night. Super lightweight, durable, and strong. I have the 10’6” MHMF, 10’ MMF, 9’ MMF and the 7’ MMF. The 10’6” is my go to for Bucktails in accordance to the rating. 10’ and 9’ are my go to for swimming plugs, bucktails, and topwater. 5-7” plugs. 7’ is my go to for close quarters for lighter bucktails and lighter swimming plugs and topwater. I could not recommend a better surf rod if you fish for hours and hours on end.
