I had the old model 8’ heavy power medium action st.croix I had it for a while and used it for all kinds of fishing from tarpon to snapper. It recently just broke and st.croix warranted me a new one and asked if I wanted to upgrade because they didn’t make them anymore so I said sure for an extra $50 I got the legend 7’11 didn’t have it 2 months fished it maybe 3 times and it’s already snapped. I just don’t think they are built like they used to be. Let’s hope they will warranty this one
I'm sure the rod will work fine but I bought a reel to match the rod while waiting for the rod to arrive. Website even shows a square patch to demonstrate the color of the rod. But the rod arrived not even close. I get it. It's not a new car. It's just a fishing rod, but it's my money and I am disappointed. The color was not important to st croix but it was important to me (and my money).
I bought this rod at the direction of Dan from St.Croix. First off I really like the rod (7’) for 1/4oz jigheads with soft plastic for inshore fishing in Texas. The rod has a great build quality and the feel of the action is superb. I found it to have plenty of power to turn fish and get them away from the boat or weeds when needed. I only wish I could change a few things such as a slimmer rod seat and eyelets that have only a single place that mounts to the rod(think GLoomis). But I get it, they build them this way so it’s just what it is. That being said I prefer the action and power of this rod over my AllStar & Gloomis rods. And I really like those two other rod builders. I will add another soon, I know it’s a pricey rod and it was hard for me to spend that much. But I think if you give it a try you will not be disappointed. Thanks Dan for the recommendation.
I live in Florida (but am a cheesehead originally from WI) and have had bad luck with other brands due to the harsh saltwater environment. I saw this new model and thought I’d give them a try. Are the expensive? Of course...but they are more than just a fishing rod. The balance, ergonomics and utter craftsmanship is impeccable. Fit & finish are excellent. Components, only the best. The dual locking reel seat holder; wow (you have to hold in your hand to really feel the difference). And the sensitivity coupled with the backbone and power...absolutely mind blowing. I purchased three casting rods (each mated to a Shimano Trans) and have tackled tarpon, snook, Goliath grouper and redfish with no problems. You would think since they’re so light that they couldn’t; but they really can. Honestly, I am so pleased with these rods that I want to purchase every model.
And if you don’t mind St. Croix, please see if you can expand the number of casting models (like a 7’ or 7’6” Heavy, etc). Thanks St. Croix for an amazing product!
