Professional/Personal Highlights: Rick answered our "Favorite Technique?" question as follows: "Throwing small crankbaits such as a Thunderstick Jr with an Avid 6' ML rod and 8 lb test. I have caught hundreds of 24" and bigger walleye with this tactic. In the fall I use the same setup with a Suspending Shad Rap over deeper water. I catch great numbers of really big smallmouth. Either way the light rod and line allow me to throw these lures a long way! This is key to my success in the very clear water lakes I fish. Same reason I like the 7' Avid Musky Rod - People are always amazed how far I can cast a medium sized bait. Throwing farther simply means I cover more water." Rick should know; he was there. He was also in on another major event in the world of fishing: "In 1976 at the age of 14 I joined the staff at Dick Kaminski's D-Bar-D Resort. There I met and fished with many of the editors and staff of Fishing Facts and In Fisherman magazines. The first In Fisherman magazine was put together at the D-Bar-D Resort according to Ron Lindner in their 100th anniversary issue." Rick grew up in Madison where he fished mostly for bass. But when he moved to northeast Wisconsin's Vilas County everything was different. Evaluating walleye and musky structure took some learning but, as noted above, he had some of the best instructors on this planet. They taught him well for in September of '04 Rick caught (on a St. Croix Avid rod, of course), and released his largest musky to date; it can be viewed on Rick's website. It is definitely worth a look.
